nner like noth-ing else so much as that of the theatre. It was perhaps merely an odd fancy—thougha likely enough one—that is responsible for thesimile; but it is pertinent to remark that thistiny emerald, set in a sea of sapphire, wasreally one of the many haunts of Grace OMal-ley, the famous chieftainess and warring ama-zon of the sixteenth century. Here she ac-tually did live, hoarded her arms and muni-tions, concealed her treasures, and imprisonedher captives, hence it is with reason thatthe description lives to-day. One commendsthe perspicacity of Grace OMalley, or GraniaUaile, as she is sometimes called, in havingselected such a beautiful spot for her strong-hold, sheltered on one side by the purple hillsof Connemara, and on the other guarded bythe open sea.
