is so often claimed by the proud native.The celebrated Gap of Dunloe is far moredeserving for its natural scenic splendour, and,in its way, rivals anything in Ireland. The popular method of imbibing the charmof Dunloe is a combination of picnic, al frescoluncheons, and donkey-riding. This answerswell enough for the tripper, but is as un-satisfying to the real lover of nature as animitation Swiss chalet set out in a Londonpark, or a Japanese tea-garden built out ofbamboo poles from Africa. The Gap of Dunloe is a grand defile, per-haps five miles in length, which can only beexplored and truly enjoyed by a pilgrimagealong its solitary and rugged road on foot.Its scenic aspect is gloomy and grand, withmirrored lakes, lofty mountains, and a thickundergrowth of heather and ivy. It is, how-ever, in no manner theatrical. Through thiswild glen ripples the river Lee, linking its fivetiny lakes as with a silver thread.
