It is a typical workof the German Renaissance. The oblong space issurrounded by three tiers of colonnades, and thesquat, dusky-red pillars and flattened arches breathethe ponderous Gemutlichheit of the days when Mu-nich used to applaud the flower of Bavarian nobilitybreaking lances in the lists below, the pavement ofwhich is now littered with the charcoal and the cru-cibles of the royal mint. About the palace itself there hangs little of theatmosphere of olden days. For each ruler of thelong line felt it his duty to add to, subtract from,multiply, and divide this huge complex, until themedieval was almost eliminated, and many of thelater portions became unimpassioned echoes ofFrench or Italian prototypes. In the long, formal sweep of the western fa9ade,for example, a bronze Madonna stands in a nicheabove an ever-glowing light, a tender German motifborrowed from the highland farmhouse, with itswooden patron saint. In the Grotto Court one comes suddenly on a de-lightful instance of Bavarian charm—a vivid fleckof soft turf full of water-babies on ivied pedestalssurrounding a fountain of Perseus worthy of thestreets of old Augsburg. The plashing of the water,the cool greens and yellows of the palace walls, theperfect patina of the sculptures, the fantastic shellgrotto at one end—all make a pleasant contrast tothe monotonous splendors of the long festal suiteswithin.
