Text Appearing Before Image:
Hofmanns Christ in the Tem-ple, and the appealing Holy Night by VonUhde. An old traveler once declared that he preferred toinvestigate mountains from the foot, inns from theinside, and palaces from the outside. The wandererin Germany soon learns this method, particularlywith palaces; but a visit to the Dresden castle is amildly amusing exception to the usual rule. Its exterior is not forbidding, like the ordinaryGerman palace, being enlivened with red tiles, yellowplaster, and a graceful green steeple; with Renais-sance gables and, in the court, with round stair-towerswhich recall the fact that Arnold of Westphalia re-built it at the time when he was creating theAlbrechtsburg at Meissen. The bedchamber of August the Strong is large, and his throne-room, adjoining, is hung with pic-tures of Leda and Aphrodite. The rooms are not sooverladen with ornament as to be unfriendly, andone can imagine people actually taking their plea-sure in the festal hall. Pictures are there, to be sure, 288
Text Appearing After Image:
^ ■\W)l^m^ ■?d DRESDEN of the inevitable Kaisers, but they look almost docile, and are neutralized by such homely frescos as RingAround a Rosy and Washing the Baby, anoperation not unknown to those palace walls. The Green Vault is a place that contains earthsgreatest display of knickknacks, royal playthings, and jewels. There are exhibited an ivory frigate infull sail, Siamese Twins in ivory, and one hundredand forty-two fallen angels carved out of a singletusk. In a place of honor is a dish with an elaboraterepresentation of the Scarlet Woman. There aregoblets made of ostrich eggs, a silver beaker fromNuremberg in the form of a young lady, and theBible of Gustavus Adolphus. One may see vesselsand trinkets made of every stone mentioned in theBook of Revelation. A perpetual-motion clockrepresents the Tower of Babel, whereon perch eighttown pipers blowing four pipes, three trombones, and a waldhorn. Then there are wonderful Limogesenamels, the masterpieces of the old German gold-smiths
