Title
Romano British cast furniture legs
Description
English: 2 Romano fragments of possible cast lathe turned furniture legs, both are broken at both ends and although not identical are of similar form and proportions, therefore the terms upper and lower etc. are used for comparative purposes and description although the orientation of both is unknown. Both are circular-sectioned.

The larger piece comprises, from broken upper end, two engraved lines on shaft (diameter 10mm) swelling with further engraved line to a baluster-like moulding (diameter 19mm), below which it is narrowed (diameter 10mm) with a collar above engraved line on expansion (diameter 18mm) with broken stump of narrowed projection on base (diameter 9mm). Length >52mm.

The smaller piece comprises from broken upper end, two engraved lines on shaft (diameter 10mm) swelling with further engraved line to a baluster-like moulding (diameter 19mm), below which it is narrowed (diameter 10mm). >39mm.

It is possible that both objects are parts of couch legs, ‘familiar from Roman reliefs depicting funeral banquet scenes from all over the Empire’ and found in ‘a series of bronze couch legs which mostly come from Italy’, cf. illustrations and discussion of wooden furniture fragments from excavations at Scole (Liversidge in Rogerson (1977), 204-6.
