Title |
Roman tutulus plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy 2nd-century Roman disc brooch of the tutulus type. The circular brooch may have originally had six plain, equally-spaced peripheral lugs on the rim; most have been lost but thought the scars of three can be seen. The main body is a convex cone that terminates in a pellet in a recessed circular field, around which a dished disc border, now abraded (Total H.: 6.3mm; Dia.: 9.4mm). Just within the raised circumferential rim is a double incised line. On the lower surface is a concavity corresponding with the cone. On the circumferential ridge thus created is a double D-shaped lug, perforated to take a hinged pin. The iron axis bar is in situ, corroded. It retains a cast copper-alloy pin, bent to one side and broken at its tip. The losses to the rim are mainly opposite the pin lug and account for the absence of a catch-plate. Other than the damage and losses described, this brooch has survived well with a fairly even mid/light-green patina. Similar tutulus disc brooches can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2000, 347; e.g. ref. 539). |
