Title
Roman tutulus brooch
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Roman plate brooch of the Tutulus type, missing its pin and catchplate and about a third of the surface of the plate itself. The break here is very jagged and no doubt recent-ish (plough damage).

Much of the edge is damaged but three (or the remains of three) lugs remain where there is edge - originally there would have been six.
The truncated cone has a beaded rim 8.4mm in diameter and central rounded boss (3mm diameter) slightly higher. Around the base are a pair of grooves with a rib between. The edge of the plate itself (around this) projects outwards and upwards, rather like a saucer. On the reverse there is a shallow concave behind the cone.
The brooch is 27.3mm in diameter though would originally have been a little more (c.30mm). The cone stands 6mm. The brooch weighs 5.11g.

Tutulus brooches date from the late 2nd century and continue well into the 3rd.
