Title |
Roman trumpet brooch (front, profile, reverse). |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy trumpet brooch. Roman, c. AD75-175. Mass: 8.7g; length: 57.6mm; width of head: 21.5mm. There has been some loss of surface around the edge of the trumpet shaped head, and the pin is incomplete, but the brooch is otherwise largely complete. The partially recessed spring is secured by a copper-alloy axial rod between a double lug on the reverse of the head. There is raised decoration on the head, which is unclear due to corrosion products on the surface. Moulded decoration on the bow consists of a transverse rib with a further rib to either side. Two recessed panels run down the front of the bow, below the moulding. The catchplate on the reverse of the bow is almost complete, retaining most of the pin rest. There is a moulded foot at the base. In her "Roman Brooch Timeline", Worrell (2007) dates trumpet brooches to AD75-175. |
