Title |
Roman toilet spoon |
||
Description |
English: A Roman copper alloy ear scoop or other similar toilet spoon. The implement has a small narrow scoop at one end, rather than a round spoon bowl. This has a rounded end and appears to be complete. Above the scoop is a reel moulding or a central rounded element flanked by a collar at each end. The shaft tapers from the reel and is circular in section and only 1.7mm in diameter. The shaft is bent and the end is a patinated break. From the description given in Crummy (page 59), this implement sounds most like a surgical ear scoop. The scoop part is similar to but smaller than that on number 1917 in Crummy. This type of tool may also be classified as a ligula and appears similar to the illustration in the PAS Roman Training Notes. |
