Title
Roman steelyard weight
Description
English: A finely moulded steelyard weight in the form of a human female head dating from the Roman period. The weight has a copper alloy skin filled with lead. There is faint ferrous corrosion at the top where a loop may have been attached. The woman has carefully moulded hair drawn into a loose French pleat at the back with a small bun at the nape of the neck. There is a hole in the top of the head where the lead filling and iron staining is visible. Her face is plump with a narrow mouth, heavily lidded eyes and her nose is damaged. Instead of a neck is another oval opening through which the lead filling is visible. Similar objects recorded on the database include HAMP-BD4D67 and NARC-7A7B81. The weight is 29.68mm long, 27.35mm wide and 23.59mm thick. It weighs 72.79g, which, allowing for the weight of the missing loop may be about a quarter of a Roman pound.
