Title |
Roman steelyard weight |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast lead probable steelyard weight with iron attachments, probably dating to the Roman period, between AD 43 – 410 (length: 51mm; diameter: 44.5mm; weight: exceeds weight limit of scales). The weight is irregularly bi-conical in shape with a circular section. There does not appear to be iron remains as you might expect at the top of the artefact. At the opposing base end of the bi-conical weight, however, there is a corroded and incomplete iron protrusion (length of protrusion: 5.5mm; width/ thickness of protrusion: 6mm). The iron fitting may continue through the centre of the weight although it is impossible to be certain. Overall, the artefact is in a worn and poor condition. |
