Title
Roman snake-form finger-ring
Description
English: A copper-alloy snake-form finger-ring of Roman date. Snake-form jewellery appears to have been introduced into Britain in the 1st century AD (see Johns, 1996, p. 44-47). It continued in popularity well into the second century and possibly beyond.

The ring is slightly bent (although the form is roughly as it would have been, with the head above the tail) but appears to be complete. The widest part is at the middle of the head; from here it tapers to a pointed snout and, behind, towards the much narrower back end. Extending from the back of the head to approximately mid way around the hoop is a decorative central recess.

The object has a bright green patina and is slightly corroded. It measures 25.6mm wide, 18.5mm high and weighs 5.3g.
