Title
Roman silver intaglio from a finger ring
Description
English: FIND LIAISON'S REPORT

Description of find

A rectangular silver intaglio from a finger ring. The intaglio is decorated with an incised rope-like perimeter, enclosing a cockerel standing left with a pellet to either side. Cockerels were often associated with the god Mercury. There is a degraded cream coloured fill, probably enamel, remaining in some of the perimeter cells and also parts of the cockerel.

Discussion

The intaglio can be compared to three other finger rings found together with a hoard of coins ranging from Postumus to Theodosius I (AD 379-395) at Amesbury, Wiltshire in 1843. Two of the three finger rings were decorated with animal scenes; one depicts a griffin and the other a stag and a bird (Kent, J.P.C & Painter, K.S. 1977. p62 nos 141-143).
