Title
Roman silver finger ring, 2008-T716
Description
English: Treasure number- 2008 T716.

Roman silver finger ring, complete, with ovular hoop which expands and swells to a flattened bezel set with an oval, orangey-red carnelian intaglio. The intaglio depicts Bonus Eventus, who is shown standing facing with his head left, his outstretched left hand holding a patera, and his right arm down by his side ears of corn. The figure stands on an engraved line to represent the earth. The inside of the hoop is concreted with traces of soil.

Discussion: Bonus Eventus, the male equivalent of Ceres and therefore associated with agriculture, is a popular figure on gemstones in Britain. For parallels see Henig 1978, nos. 203-15, and also the Snettisham jeweller's hoard, particularly no. 114 (Johns 1997).

Date: 2nd century AD

Ext. d.: 22mm Int. d.: 15.1mm Wt. (uncleaned): 8.1g

Note: this item is made substantially of silver and is more than 300 years old, and thus qualifies as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996.
