Description
English: This report will consider these coins with respect to the criteria laid down in the Treasure act (1996): Namely, their age, precious metal content and whether the coins can be said to come from the same find.

Circumstances of discovery:

The two coins are similar types and date to the Prestwood A hoard from the same findspot:

'Prestwood A' (110 Roman silver coins) was discovered in July 1999 by a team of metal detectorists: M (Report to HM Coroner 10th Nov. 1999, and an addendum reported 18th Nov. 1999). The addenda was found by different people with the aid of metal detectors on the 26th March 2005

Description of Find

The coins of Prestwood A range in issue date from 31 BC to AD 220 (during the reign of the emperor Elagabalus, r. AD 218-222). All the coins are the standard Roman silver denomination of the time, the denarius. The two new discoveries are also denarii and date to within this group:

From the Same Find?

The Treasure Act requires that a group of coins should 'belong to the same find'. From the similarity of composition to Prestwood A, it would be safe to assume that these two coins, being from the same findspot, are subsequent discoveries that were originally part of the same deposit and should be treated as addenda to this case.

Metal Content

The two coins from the current find are about 50-80% silver. The Treasure Act threshold for two or more coins from the same find is a minimum of 10% precious metal (ten or more coins of base composition also qualify).


Conclusion

On the balance of probabilities, therefore, I conclude that these coins belong together as a hoard and constitute a prima facie case of treasure, both on the grounds of being two or more precious metal coins from the same find, and on the grounds of their potential association with an earlier treasure case.
