Title
Roman seal box lid with phallic design
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Roman seal box lid. The lid was originally leaf shaped in plan but the narrow end is now missing. The lid is decorated with inlaid enamel (surviving in various degrees of thickness) surrounding a moulded copper alloy phallus in high relief at the centre. The enamel is blue and there are traces of red spaced equidistantly around it in four places; in the area where the blue enamel survives in its original thickness, the red enamel appears as a circular dot. The phallus is well modelled with a transverse ridge on the shaft, close to the testicles. Within the moulding is a circular recess, representing the foreskin, which would originally have held enamel, no trace of which now survives. The end of the shaft is split/forked. The reverse of the lid is flat, but has a rivet indicating where the separately cast phallus is attached. The hinge has traces of iron corrosion from the pin. The object is 26.5mm long, 21.4mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 4.48g. This seal box lid probably dates to the 2nd or 3rd century.
