Title
Roman seal box (incomplete)
Description
English: The lower half of a Roman copper-alloy seal box.

A lozenge-shaped arrangement of four circular perforations occupies the central area of the flat-sectioned base, which is now distorted but would originally have been oval. The perpendicular side has two opposing cut-outs, located halfway along its length, through which the binding cord would have been passed. A small aperture, situated adjacent to one of these cut-outs, is likely to be a casting flaw. The hinge comprises two rounded lugs, separated from one another by a gap, each with a circular perforation for the now-missing bar. A rounded lug handle with empty setting projects outwards at the opposite end to the hinge.

Length: 30.8mm; width: 13.2mm; height: 6.1mm. Weight: 2.35g.

Several examples of seal boxes were found in excavations in Colchester, their suggested date range being 2nd to 3rd century (Crummy 1983: 103). Three seal boxes found at Verulamium, St. Albans, were found in early to mid 2nd century contexts (Frere 1972: 122, nos. 65 - 67).
