The Antonine column stood not farfrom the Aurelian, close to the Piazza del Monte Citorio. The inscription records that it was set up to Antoninusby his sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.f Itwas of plain granite, and carried a statue of thedeified emperor. The pedestal now stands in thespacious apse of the Giardino della Pigna of theVatican (Amelung, Vaticanische Sculpturen, p. 883,No. 223).$ On the front panel of the basis is theapotheosis of the imperial couple, who are shown inhalf length borne up to heaven on the outstretchedwings of a winged male figure. The design is similar tothat of the Apotheosis of Plotina on the Hadrianic panelin the Conversatori (Plate LXXI. Fig. 2). The nudegenius is boldly made to cut across the design, recallingin this the figure that bears the deified Augustus on the * For the cult of Asclepios in Rome, see Preller, RomischeMythologie, pp. 406-408. t For the inscription see Dessau, vol, i. p. 88, No. 347.X The description is by Petersen.
