| Description |
English: Roman road near Broughton This view looking west-north-west is near to the western end of an almost straight unclassified road 3km long that comes from near Horsebridge to the east. This is on the line of the Roman road, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, from Winchester (then Venta Belgarum), to Old Sarum (then Sorviodunum), the original site of Salisbury, a distance of 21.5 miles.
The Roman road crossed the river Test at Horsebridge about 4km to the east, and there is believed to have been a posting station, Brige, near Buckholt Farm about 2.5km to the west. A posting station was a small town on a main road, where travelling officials could find an inn (mansio). |
