Summary
[edit]DescriptionRoman road, Great Ridge near Chicklade - geograph.org.uk - 470632.jpg |
English: Roman road, Great Ridge near Chicklade This is the bridleway looking east that runs dead straight on the line of a Roman road for 2km along the chalk ridge from the centre of Great Ridge to its eastern end (though the Roman road is initially aligned some 50m north of the bridleway at the western end, but the two imperceptibly come together over 1/2km). This view is about a quarter of the way along the bridleway from the centre with oak woodland on either side.
The Roman road ran from the river Axe in the Mendips in the west to Old Sarum (old Salisbury) in the east, and it was built principally to bring lead from the mines in the Mendips. Wiltshire County Council website shows a map from an 1812 book, The Ancient History of Wiltshire, of the Roman road through Great Ridge http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/gettextimage.php?id=5082 |
