Title |
Roman ring: Possible harness ring |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy ring of uncertain function and date but probably dating from the Late Iron Age to Roman period. The ring has a bevelled outer edge with pronounced medial ridge. Internally the hoop is rounded. One side of the ring is narrower than the rest, possibly indicative of wear (from a strap for example). The ring has a nice patina suggestive of the date indicated. Rings such as this one, with a convex inner side, may have had various uses such as harness fittings or as loops affixed to other type of straps for suspension of items such as swords. Jackson illustrates a similar example from Camerton (1990:49 plate 14 no.149), again with a pronounced central ridge on the outer side. Suggested date: 100 BC - AD 100. |
