Title |
Roman rim sherds |
||
Description |
English: Two rim sherds of wheelmade Roman pottery, from two different vessels. One of the sherds is a local sandy ware from East Sussex, known as ‘East Sussex ware’. Weight: 27.4g. This sherd dates to the 1st – 2nd centuries AD. This sherd has frequent flint inclusion 1mm – 3mm. There is evidence of iron staining on the exterior of the sherd. The sherd has an everted rim which is defined by a shallow groove on the internal and external surfaces, which is situated c. 7.5mm below the rim. The body of the vessel is c. 8.2mm thick. This vessel would have had a rim diameter of 20cm. The second rim sherd is from an imitation samian ware vessel. This sherd has an overhanging rim, which is flat albeit for the down turned rim. It also has a ‘second rim’, which extends from the main body of the vessel upwards. This vessel would have had a rim diameter of 24cm (measured from the terminal of the overhanging rim). This sherd is very powdery. It has a light bluish-grey interior and a light reddish-yellow exterior. Weight: 23g. The breaks on both sherds are worn and abraded. |
