Title
Roman republic: Serated Denarius
Description
English: Roman Republican Serrated Denarius of moneyer L. Aurelias Cotta (Crawford 314/1D). The coin was struck in Rome in 105 BC. The coin has also evidence of Brockage: The term Brockage refers to a mis-struck coin. In this example the reverse face of the coin has been over struck with the obverse (which is in reverse and indenteded rather than in relief). This was caused by the coin sticking to the upper part of the die when a second coin was struck. This sort of mistake is relatively common and must reflect the speed at which the coinage was being struck.

The coin has also been pierced for suspension. A small neat hole has been pierced in the edge of the coin in the upper right hand edge (at approximately 2 o'clock). This hole is not worn.

Thanks are extended to Dr David Symons of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for his advice and identification of this coin.
