Title |
Roman pot. Illustrated by: Dom Andrews. |
||
Description |
English: Five joining sherds representing 50% of an undecorated samian ware plate of Form 18 and probably a product of the Central Gaulish kilns. It dates from 50-100AD. The fabric is a much more pinkish colour with a ‘soapy texture’ which is smooth to the touch and the slip is a light brownish-red colour. The rim has a small rounded beaded lip, which has been defined by a line underneath it. The rim is 4mm in thickness. The foot ring would have been added to the platter once it had come out of the original mould. Part of the potters stamp remains on the base of the platter, only one letter is legible; ‘O’ which perhaps could be transcribed as ‘of the workshop of'. There are two incised rings on the base of the internal surface of the plate and the central area of the plate is slightly raised.The sherds are relatively un-worn and the breaks appear to be fresh and un-abraded. |
