Title
Roman possible crossbow fragment (plan, profile, underside)
Description
English: A possible knop from a cast copper-alloy developed crossbow brooch, dating to the Roman period circa AD 320-400.The fragment is biconical in form and circular in cross section. The object has a pointed projection extending vertically from the upper edge. The object has a mid-green coloured well-developed patina. It is also possible that this object is a pinhead from a hair pin, although the pin heads illustrated by Cool (1990) are predominately less than 10mm in width.

Bayley and Butcher (2004:p.119) illustrate a developed crossbow brooch with a large collared knop (No.321). Bayley and Butcher discuss how the developed crossbow brooch always has knobs on the end of the crossbar and the upper bow and are often 'onion' shaped. Sometimes the knobs are separate pieces.

The object measures 14.06mm in diameter, 14.33mm in thickness and weighs 9.7 grams.
