Title |
Roman pin |
||
Description |
English: A well preserved example of a copper alloy Roman pin. This pin is 100.02mm long, with a shaft thickness of 2.72mm and weighs 5.50g. The head of the pin is an elongated, faceted cuboid, having four, main lozenge shaped faces, with triangular facets between when viewed faced on, and a square top, when viewed from above. The length of the head is 10.6mm of the entire elength of the pin, and 4.62mm thick. There is no decoration on the pin head, and it has been integrally cast with the shaft. The shaft is circular in section and maintains a regular thickness for its entire length, terminating in a slightly tapered point. The overall patina of the pin is dark brown. This pin fits into Cools Group 15 of pins (Arcaheological Journal 1990, page 164)and is therefore most likely to be 3rd or 4th century in date.Cool classifies the pin as a hair pin, but it may equally have been used as a dress pin. |
