Title
Roman pin: dress pin
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy pin dating to the Roman or possibly the early-medieval period. The pin has a rounded head with roughly flat underside, being D-shaped in cross section. The pin head is decorated with multiple incised grooves that radiate outwards from the centre. These grooves are bound by a circumferential groove at the base of the pin head. The shank is integral and slowly tapers from the pin head, however the shank is incomplete and terminates in a break. Similar examples are recorded on this database; round headed pins are sometimes associated with the Roman military however they were popular items of dress.
