Title |
Roman phalerae mount |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy Roman mount. The front face of the circular mount has a central circle (diameter 22.19mm). Around the outside of the circle is a white enamel border with blue enamel decoration. Most of the enamel still remains. Inside the circle is milleflori decoration, which is made up of tiny rods of different coloured glass cut into slices and fixed into the copper alloy setting. The milleflori decoration consists of a chequered board of red and blue, with each square of the board having white rods intermitted between the red and blue. On the reverse of the mount is an integral, central copper alloy stud, which has a length of 6.45mm. The overall diameter of the phalerae is 32.49mm, the thickness of the face is 2.61mm and the weight is 11.26g. The phalerae would have been fitting to the baldric and is dated to the third century. |
