Title
Roman needle fragment
Description
English: A copper alloy possible Roman needle shaft. It has been bent at right angles near its midpoint at some stage. The shaft measures 89.41mm in unfolded length. It has a rounded section, one half being c.2mm in width and coming to a point at its terminal. The other half is wider, c.2.7mm, and flattens to a more rectangular section at its terminal which is incomplete due to old breaks. The eye of the needle and the broader, flatter terminal are missing, but this shaft corresponds in shape and size to a complete example from Roman Colchester (Crummy 1983, fig.70, no.1976). It weighs 2.59g.
