Title
Roman needle (probably)
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy object which is probably a Roman needle. No exact parallel could be found for this piece, but similar needles, in bone, have been found in excavations in Colchester (see Crummy, 1983, p. 66) and the general appearance and patina suggest a Roman date.

The artefact is narrow, parallel-sided and tapers to a point at the top. The upper surface is convex and the underside is flat. A short distance in from the point is a recessed area containing a small circular hole and this is flanked on each side by three transverse grooves. The bottom end is rounded and was probably worked to shape after the needle had been broken. The surface of the object has a light green patina.

The needle measures 48.8mm long, 4.4mm wide and 2.3mm thick. The weight is 2.61g.
