Title
Roman needle, obverse
Description
English: A Roman copper-alloy needle with a characteristic groove above and below the eye of Crummy's Type 3 (Crummy 1983, 67). The eye is 9.3mm long and 1.6mm wide. The shaft is circular in cross-section and 2.6mm in diameter at the top. The pin is slightly pitted and bent, but is otherwise in good condition. The surviving length of the needle is 111.4mm and it weighs 3.9g. Similar needles were found in excavations at Colchester (Crummy 1983, 67 nos. 1991-1992 fig. 70. This style of needle was also used in the post-medieval period (Crummy 1983, 67). The attribution of a Roman date to this needle is also based upon the large proportion of Roman material found in the vicinity.
