Title |
Roman mount |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy fragment of a larger object, possibly a vessel mount, dating to the Roman period (43-410 AD). The fragment takes the form of a swimming duck, a popular Roman motif. Similar examples of this form are recorded on this database including: BH-291876 and IOW-A8BE13, vessel mounts; SWYOR-ED78A0, a possible hair pin; NLM-8A6096, a finger ring and LEIC-EDEE81 (and others), a zoomorphic brooch. Given the fragmentary nature of this object, it is concievable that it could belong to any of the broad object types listed above.
The fragment has a flat base from which the three-dimensional duck projects upwards. The body forms a pointed oval with a rounded breast tapering to a point at the end of the body, wings resting on the back. The neck is ovoid and projects upwards from the breast before curving at ninety degrees to form the head and beak. There is an old, worn break at the back of the body and a tab projecting at the front from the break which also terminates in an old break. It measures 20.6mm in length, 13.9mm in height, 8.8mm in width and the body is 5.4mm thick between base and top of wings. The fragment weighs 4.38g. |
