Title |
Roman knife handle in the form of Minerva. |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy wax spatula handle of Feugere Type A5, in the form of a helmeted figure of the goddess Minerva. The face is quite worn but the hair is still visible on the right side of the head, with combed strands formed by incised lines. The head is topped with a high-crested corinthian helmet. The body tapers from the shoulders towards the blade end and it is possible that arms are represented by inscribed lines, forming two straight arms held tightly to the torso. Although this may be part of the drapery represented on the torso, which is in the form of longitudinal grooves down each side, with two triangular grooves forming a "V" at the neck. The back is very worn but some of the remaining patina on the surface shows the drapery probably continued around the back. The plate at the base is cylindrical and would have been attached to a knife blade. |
