Title
Roman knee brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy Knee brooch dating to the late second to early third century AD. The head is a flat, semi-circular, undecorated plate. On the reverse, there are two semi-circular perforated lugs which holds the axis-bar, spring mechanism and pin in place. The pin is intact. The bow is arched, faceted, D-shaped and hollow in section. It is broken in the area from which the foot would have originally extended. The brooch measures 29mm in length. The head plate has a width of 22mm; the bow a width of 10mm. The brooch fragment weighs 6.1g. Bayley and Butcher classify this as a Type 171 and note that it is more common in Britain and rare or missing on continental sites. It occurs on military sites including South Shields, but also on southern civilian sites. The only dated examples come from a drain at the the legionary fortress of Caerleon dating to AD 160-230 and from the Jewry Wall site at Leicester dating to about AD 220 (Bayley and Butcher 2004, 179-180).
