Title
Roman knee brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy Knee brooch, missing its pin and the curl of the catchplate. It measures 27.1mm in length and weighs 3.75grams.

Head is 10.45mm in width and terminates in two circular end caps. At the tip of the head is a slightly worn semi-circular loop. An almost complete spring is located in the recess at the reverse of the head. The spring consists of three coils before the incomplete pin projects outwards, below the pin is the complete chord.

The bow projects outwards at ninety degrees before curving downwards towards the foot. The bow is semi-circular in cross section and undecorated. It tapers from 7.1mm wide at the head to 3.3mm wide before expanding towards the foot which is D shaped in cross section and 4.9mm wide.

The reverse of the brooch is flat and the catchplate is located on the reverse of the foot. The curl to hold the pin is missing.

A similar knee brooch can be found on the database from Hampshire: HAMP-8DD537, and see Hattatt (2007 A Visual Catalogue..., page 335 fig 194) for similar types.

DF Mackreth (2011 Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, Vol 1 page 189) says this type of brooch with a vertical catchplate is definitely a British variety.
