Title
Roman knee brooch
Description
English: An incomplete and tiny copper alloy Roman knee brooch (AD 150-250), missing a lower bow, catchplate and pin. The head loop (unpierced) is also incomplete. Measures 20.81mm in length and weighs 1.8g.

The wings are semi-circular in cross-section with (damaged) circular ends holding the axis bar in place (c.6mm diameter). The wings span 10.04mm and to the reverse three incomplete loops curl around the intact axis bar. There were probably originally another one or two coils. The remains of an attachment loop extend upwards. To the reverse it is loop-like, while to the front it is unpierced.

The bow extends from the bottom of the wings, the reverse being flat while the front side is curved. The bow is prominent and curves evenly outwards and in again, tapering from 7.07x1.71mm wide to 3.46x1.24mm at the old break.

The most prominent points, horizontally across the centre of the wings and vertically along the centre of the bow, is a dull tin-coloured strip. This may be an inlay or simply a patch of wear at the most prominent points - however they are possibly too uniformly straight for this.

The brooch is similar in form to Hattatt's 'enamelled' type (2007 fig.194), though of course without the enamelled decoration. Cf. WILT-8696B5 from Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire.
