Title |
Roman hypocaust tile fragment (reverse and upper face) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of handmade tile, probably hypocaust tile. The tile is a sub-square shape in plan with two edges forming the original corner. In profile the tile has an ‘L’ shape, with the short vertical edge being broken, therefore its original depth cannot be measured. The upper surface of the tile has combing marks forming a series of parallel grooves. The reverse of the tile has impressions of sand which suggests the tile was laid on a bed of sand during manufacture. The fabric is quite hard with a dark grey core and oxidised orange surfaces. It weighs 159.28g.
The combing marks suggest the tile is probably a fragment of Roman hypocaust. |
