Roman hinged Polden Hill brooch (front, profile, reverse)
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type, West Midlands), Mackreth 2011, 4.a. Plate 46. Roman period, c.AD 80-120. Mass: 13.6g; length: 59.7; width: 22.2mm; depth: 16.4mm. T-shaped in plan with a humped bow. Semi-cylindrical side wings with pierced end caps holding an axial rod. Vertical slot behing the head to hold the pin, which is missing. The slot is filled with an unidentified brown substance, probably iron corrosion. Moulded sub-spherical foot. The catchplate with bent over pin-rest is largely complete on the reverse of the bow. There are moulded "plates" on either side of the head and vertical ridges highlight the end caps on the front of the side-wings. There is a recessed median design running down the head from a notiticeable crest at the top.
