Title |
Roman glass melon bead |
||
Description |
English: A complete translucent dark blue glass melon bead. There are seven unevenly spaced vertical grooves. Light chipping at one end are indicative of abrasion with another bead. The other end has no signs of wear at the perforation. There are two large ‘pits’ on the external surface which are the result of air bubbles in the glass. The bead is 8.1mm high and weighs 1.54g. It has a diameter of 12.4mm and the perforation has a diameter of 3.5mm.
Sally Worrell adds: Glass melon beads are present in Europe in the pre-Roman period, and 16 were found in a La Tene burial at the Wetwang Slack cemetery, Yorkshire (Dent 1982, 445-6 fig.7). They are found in many 1st and early 2nd century contexts and appear most frequently on Flavian sites, including the Agricolan supply base at Red House, Corbridge (Charlesworth 1959, 166 fig. 22; 1979, 59 nos. 17-8) and Ribchester, Lancashire (Price and Cottam 2000, 28 nos. 198-205). Roman glass melon beads were made in a range of sizes, although they are frequently large and none appear to be as small as some of the smallest faience beads. |
