Title
Roman floor tile 1st to 4th century AD.
Description
English: Roman floor tile 1st to 4th century AD from Muncaster Roman Tile Kiln in Eskdale. Finds have been made on this site since 1884 and it has been the subject of small scale excavations. The fort at Ravenglass was excavated from 1976 to 1978 by Dr T. W. Potter who published 22 vessels from the fort that he considered to have been produced at this tile works and that Muncaster products were also in evidence at a number of sites ranging from Watercrook in the South to Beckfoot and Papcastle in the North. Two kilns have been previously excavated and provide clear evidence for the production of a wide range of building materials comprising bricks, imbrices, tegulae, box tiles and voussoirs. The length is 135mm, the width is 70mm and the thickness 40mm.
