Title
Roman finger-ring
Description
English: Roman silver octagonal ring bezel holding within it a denarius of Plautilla (wife of Caracalla). The opposite (reverse) face shows Concordia standing left with patera and sceptre, but the edge of the bezel is rough here suggesting this was the side that would have been attached to the hoop. The bezel is 21.7x20.6mm around the obverse of the coin, which is set 1.4mm below this edge. The edge here is smooth and 1.6mm thick. The edges of the bezel slope in wards and on the underside where the rough edges are, the bezel measures 18.9x18.9mm. The reverse of the coin is 1.6mm below this rough edge. The bezel stands 5.1mm high and weighs 5.52g. The bezel is octagonal in shape on the outside but the inner surface has a circular section. There appears to be some kind of residue on the under (reverse) side of the bezel. Catherine Johns comments in The Jewellery of Roman Britain 1996, p.58, on jewellery set with coins, that 'To all intents and purposes the custom applies only to gold jewellery set with gold coins, and it appears to have been far more popular on the Continent than in Britain'. The obverse of the denarius: Bust draped right, hair waved and drawn down on neck. PLAVTILLA AVGVSTA Reverse:Concordia standing to left with patera and sceptre.
