Title |
Roman enamel decorated cast copper alloy plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: Roman enamel decorated cast copper alloy plate brooch. It has been somewhat abraded and the fastening is missing. It is decorated in enamel with a sunburst or flower or star like motif on a field of enamel that now appears red. The enamel of the body of the star has survived its ageing to look dark blue while the circular arms now look dark green. Closely resembles Hattatt type 118 (cf Hattatt, R, 1982. Ancient and Romano-British Brooches Sherborne, pp137-8, pl58). Dates between AD c50 and c250 but most likely second century (AD 100 to 200) in date.
The diameter is 23mm, and the weight is 3.35g. see also SWYOR-A3F5C7, SWYOR-A76551, WILT-1A4464, and SWYOR-B63E53 |
