Title
Roman ear scoop
Description
English: A Roman copper-alloy ear scoop.

The flat-sectioned body, slightly bent, is 'leaf shaped', the sides bowing outwards at the top before becoming parallel, tapering towards the bottom, where there is an oval scoop. A line of herringbone incisions extends vertically down the centre of the upper surface. The neck is located at the top and consists of a solid cylinder, separated from the body by a simple moulding. The loop has been lost in antiquity.

Length: 44.5mm; width: 7.7mm; maximum thickness (handle): 2.4mm; weight: 1.75g.

Three similar ear scoops are recorded on the PAS database: BH-8F6032, NLM-0405D4 and NCL-B56DD1. The form of these scoops can be compared to that of the 1st to 2nd century 'Baldock' type nail-cleaner (see Crummy 2001: 2 - 3), suggesting they may be of a similar date range.
