Title
Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: An incomplete, copper alloy Roman brooch of Dragonesque type, dating from AD 75 - 175, Macreth's type 3.c2 with suggested later dating (AD 200 - later 3rd century). The remaining portion consists of the central body and one of the zoomorphic terminals. The body is decorated with enamelled cells; a row of (at least five) lozenge shaped cells along the centre, filled with blue enamel, flanked by triangular cells of red enamel. The zoomorphic terminal is in the form of an animal head with a raised ear and upturned snout, again decorated with red and blue enamel. The second zoomorphic head has broken away and is missing. The loop of the copper alloy pin remains in situ round the surviving neck. The remaining portion of the brooch is 41.9mm long, 22.9mm wide and 12.5mm thick across the loop. 13.26g.

Similar brooches are illustrated in Mackreth, 2011, Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, volume 2, plate 130. Compare especially number 7794.
