Title
Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy Roman brooch of the dragonesque type, dating from AD 75 - 175. The remaining portion consists of a short section of the central S shaped body and one of the zoomorphic ends. The end is in the form of two conjoined loops, the outer one smaller than the inner one, with a projecting oval knop on the outer edge of the brooch at the junction of the two loops. The larger of the two loops carries the remains of a copper alloy pin of rectangular section. The underside of the broader portion of the body is concave; the remainder of the underside is flat. The upper side of the body and the two loops are bevelled. The broadest part of the body carries decoration in the form of two narrow, transverse grooves flanking a broader shallow groove, adjacent to the larger of the two end loops. There is a projecting, transverse ridge just above the inner end of the oval knop and the knop itself is divided by a longitudinal groove, the two together giving the impression of a bird's beak. The brooch has a dark brown patina. It is 24.1mm long, 15.8mm wide and 5.1mm thick. It weighs 3.3gm.

Other dragonesque brooches of similar design are recorded on the database; compare for example references SWYOR-24BAF1, SWYOR-0E6FC5 and SWYOR-468C70.
