Title
Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating to the Roman period (AD 75 - AD 175).

Only one terminal of the brooch survives, a 'head' which is curvilinear in form with a curling snout and large curved ear. It is decorated with two double concentric circles, one which forms the eye and the which forms the snout. These would have originally been filled with enamel. The other end of the brooch (the 'neck') terminates in a worn break. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a mid green and uneven patina, and the concentric circles are brown, probably from traces of red enamel.

The brooch is 24.0 mm long, 13.4 mm wide and 3.0 mm thick. It weighs 2.97 g.
