Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating from teh Roman period, about AD 75 - 175. It has a reversed S-shaped body terminating in a stylised ear and snout at each end, which take the form of a C-shaped scroll. The head is connected to the body at the chin by a strut. The terminals are simply moulded and plain. The body has a moulded line along the edge, raised on the inside of the curved, and recessed on the outside. A raised collar flanked by a double line on each side runs across the body in a straight line from the chin strut. The obverse of the brooch is convex and the reverse is slightly concave. A copper alloy pin remiains wrapped around the neck. The lower part is missing and the break is patinated. The metal is of a different alloy and has patinated to green, whicile the brooch is golden brown. The loop of the pin is decorated with a central recessed line. The brooch is 57.6mm long, 23.6mm wide and 5.8mm thick, 9.1mm thick across the loop of the pin. 17.52g.
