Title
Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: A Roman dragonesque brooch dating from AD 75 - 175. The brooch is S-shaped in plan with an expanded central part. Both animal heads remain and each has pointed oval "ears" and a moulded pellet and ring "eye". The heads have a circular aperture through them and one is attached to the body by a bridge of copper alloy, leaving another circular hole between the head and the body. This is where the pin would have attached, but it is now missing. The back of the brooch is slightly concave. The brooch has a brown patina. See Hattatt's (2000) Visual Catalogue, page 351.
