Title |
Roman dragonesque brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy fragment from a dragonesque brooch dating from 75 - 175 AD (Worrell 2007). Only the head of the brooch survives. It has a exaggerated ears projecting upwards and moulded so they are sub triangular in section and a pointed oval in plan. Pointed oval cells containing red enamel make the ears clearly defined. Below, a circular cell containing blue enamel represents the eye. The snout projects forwards and curls round to join at the forehead, but the outermost part of the scroll shape has broken off and is missing, leaving just a pointed stub for the nose, and a rounded projection from the forehead with an empty circular cell in it. The neck projects from the back of the head on the left and is also broken, now just a thin stub. The brooch has a patchy light green patina showing brown metal where it is damaged. the reverse is slightly hollowed. |
