Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy brooch. Dragonesque brooch, Mackreth type DRAG 2 or 3.a4 – the former defined as lacking enamel as here, but the latter as more closely matching this style of decoration but lacking enamel in its fields. A single beast head with round nostril and eye and small pointed ear is set at one end of a comma-shaped plate with constricted ends. A central line and borders define four central rectangular cells flanked by two sub-triangular cells to either side. The other end of the brooch is a simple spur, now pointing backwards. Suggested date: Early Roman, 80-200.
